Giving help tends to feel straightforward. Being thanked for it, in the moment, often does not.

A surprising number of people report a small internal flinch when thanked directly, an urge to deflect the gratitude, minimize the help, or redirect credit elsewhere. This reflex is worth examining rather than simply indulging, because it often has less to do with humility than it appears to.
