A new name given at a significant spiritual transition, ordination, initiation, or formal commitment, is rarely meant simply as a fresh label.

The renaming typically marks a claimed discontinuity: a formal acknowledgment that the person entering this new role is not identical to the person who existed before it, even though the same body and much of the same history continues.
