Bhakti
भक्ति (bhakti)
Devotion - the path of love and surrender toward the divine, distinct from paths of knowledge or action.
Bhakti names devotion, but the word carries more heat than that translation suggests. It describes a relationship closer to love than to duty: longing, surrender, and a felt closeness to what is worshipped, rather than a purely intellectual or ethical stance toward it.
Classical thought distinguishes bhakti from the paths of knowledge (jnana) and action (karma), not as a lesser route but as one suited to a different temperament - one that moves through feeling and relationship rather than through analysis or duty alone. The bhakti traditions produced some of the most emotionally direct devotional poetry in any spiritual literature, unguarded in a way more austere paths rarely are.
Practiced seriously, bhakti asks for a kind of vulnerability that can feel exposed next to more disciplined paths. That exposure is not a side effect. It is closer to the method itself.
