Diksha
दीक्षा (diksha)
Initiation - the formal threshold by which a student is received into a practice or lineage.
Diksha names the formal act of initiation: the ceremony, transmission, or moment by which a student is received into a practice, a mantra, or a lineage, and by which the relationship between teacher and student is formally established.
The formality is the point. Almost anything transmitted by diksha could, in a purely informational sense, be read in a book. What the ceremony adds is not information but weight: a marked boundary between before and after, witnesses to the commitment, and a relationship that now carries mutual obligation rather than casual interest.
Traditions differ enormously in what diksha involves, from elaborate ritual to a single whispered word. What they share is the underlying claim that some commitments deserve a threshold - that beginning a serious practice by simply drifting into it deprives the practitioner of a resource they will later want: a definite moment they can look back on and say, there is where I began.
