Puja
पूजा (puja)
Worship - the structured practice of honoring the divine through offerings, attention, and repeated gesture.
Puja names the structured act of worship: offerings of light, water, flowers, or food, made to an image or presence, following a sequence that varies by tradition and household but shares a common architecture of approach, offering, and closing.
What distinguishes puja from private prayer is its material, gestural quality. It is done with the hands as much as with the mind, and this embodiment is not incidental. A gesture repeated daily trains the body toward reverence in a way purely mental devotion does not always manage on its own.
A simple household puja, performed with real attention, is understood in many traditions to carry as much weight as an elaborate temple ceremony performed carelessly. The scale of the ritual matters less than the quality of the attention brought to it.
