Seva

Seva names service performed without expectation of personal gain, recognition, or return, offered as a spiritual discipline rather than as a transaction or an act of charity performed at a comfortable distance.

Many traditions treat seva as a practice in its own right, equal in seriousness to meditation or study, on the reasoning that ego and self-interest are as effectively worn down by sustained, humble service as by any more inward-facing discipline. Cleaning a shared space, cooking for a community, or caring for a stranger without acknowledgment are common forms.

The absence of recognition is not incidental to seva; it is close to the mechanism. Service performed for visible credit is a different practice entirely, closer to transaction than to the surrender seva is meant to cultivate.
